Iceland, Country in the Middle of Attention

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Earlier this year, Iceland decided not to reimburse UK for insuring the UK citizens’ accounts held with Icelandic banks. Leading to (in my opinion justified) threats by UK to block Iceland’s potential accession to the EU.

Now, Icelandic volcano is churning out thousands of tons of ashes, paralyzing the air-traffic throughout Europe. It looks as if even the nature was on the side of the proud (though currently shipwrecked) vikings of finance, fighting the evil, outside world.

I understand that some (the guy in a You Tube video) have very strong negative feelings about Iceland.

Chief economist at Goldman Sachs says China is not a currency manipulator

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Chief Economist of GS claims that the renminbi is not undervalued. The statement should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Has he an incentive to reveal “the truth”NO, he couldn’t care less about the truth.

Even if he wanted to reveal the truth why didn’t he do it before? Why did he publish the statement right when America’s Treasury Department’s is expected to release a publication on currency manipulators?  Crazy coincident?

Has he an incentive to lobby in a way that positively affect his investments? YES
I don’t know whether renminbi is undervalue, but I know the GS guy will claim it,  if it’s in line with his interests. FYI Goldman-Sachs invested heavily in China in the past few years. So the incentive to lobby is clearly there.
I’m not judging; everyone is lobbying, why not Goldman Sachs then. All I’m saying is that I don’t trust him.

Harvard auctioning off slots in next year’s freshmen class – Russia to supply EU with Olive oil – We’re delighted to learn that Shakespeare is French – Russian hi-tech weapon systems

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Wow, who would have expected THIS. (Make sure you read the whole thing and check out the “learn more about the program” page).

The Economist reports on a new pipeline from Russia to the EU; it will send olive oil from vast olive grooves, planted on the steppers freed from permafrost.

The BBC reports on William Shakespeare’s origin.

Russia unveiled its new invisible tank. (James Bond had an invisible car cca. five years ago, but we haven’t seen a tank so far.)

Universities Ranking

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

I wanted to use the number of incoming links to university web sites as a proxy for the quality of the institutions.
The idea is simple, the more prestigious is the university perceived to be and the more quality research it produces, the more others write about it and link to its website. Unlike other rankings, this approach takes in to account not only the number of scientific publications, but also otherwise unobservable (unmeasurable) prestige.

Like with many (presumably) good ideas, someone already did it. It can be accessed here.

Stand up…

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Sitting can apparently be more dangerous than one would think. Not only that it’s one of the most passive things (makes you fat because you are not burning any calories), but it also prevents production of certain for the body beneficial chemicals that are produced only when muscles flex. In other words the body stops being nice to itself when you sit too much.

I am standing in the bus starting tomorrow!

Video application to the Tufts University

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Tufts, one of the three famous universities located in the Boston area encourages students to supplement their application with a Youtube video. In my opinion a brilliant idea, the world around us is changing and the university applications should keep up with the trend.
The only think I don’t like is that it might further disadvantage kids coming from low income families. Today some of the wealthy parents are hiring professionals to write application essays for their kids, tomorrow they’re going to hire Hollywood directors to make short films about their “young geniuses”. Wonder if Cameron would do an application video in 3D…

Refuge for rich Indonesians

Monday, September 28th, 2009

gdpindonesiaRich Indonesian families seek refuge in luxurious hotels as their servants make their annual pilgrimage at the end of Ramadan.
I wonder to what extent  is this exodus of rich families phenomenon of last years, during which has Indonesia experienced fast GDP growth.

BLOG move to www.tomashozik.com

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

I have decided to move this blog from www.hoze.eu to www.tomashozik.com

There are three reasons for the move:

1. I found out that “hoze“ (the original address of my blog) is a more gangta spelling for hoes. More details on hoze and hoes on urbandictionary (Thank’s our slang expert L.N. for not letting me know).
By the way this explains the Asian Hoze movies. There are five of them to my knowledge (Planning to see them once). Maybe I should keep the www.hoze.eu address for a different kind of a web site :-)

2. I think an average visitor of the blog will remember www.tomashozik.com rather than www.hoze.eu

3. I just like change.

The difference between New Haven and Geneva

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

I found first significant difference between New Haven and Geneva. When a party starts at 5pm. in Geneva, first guests will turn up sometimes after six. Here, everyone was on time.

The other thing is that in Geneva they serve cold beer, whereas in New haven it’s cold Coke…

Harvard sucks and Princeton doesn’t matter

There are people who would not agree with the above statement, but I don’t think (always unbiased) Yale Daily News would care…
